Please join First Republic and Wine Spectator New York as we celebrate Women’s History Month with an inspiring panel of California women in wine. We will discuss their unique perspectives as first- and second-generation winemakers along with their experiences navigating an industry in which only 14% of California’s 4,200 bonded wineries have a woman as their lead winemaker.

CLEO PAHLMEYER

Proprietor, Wayfarer Vineyard

Inheriting her father’s vision and verve, Cleo Pahlmeyer is the new generation of Wayfarer. Raised in Napa, California, her education took her east where she received a B.A. in Art History from the University of Virginia and went on to earn a master’s degree in Connoisseurship of Fine and Decorative Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London.

Returning to the family winery after working in the international art world, Cleo has worked closely with her father since 2008 to learn every aspect of the family business. Cleo began as a sales assistant, answering the phone and entering orders, and went on to manage direct-to-consumer sales and marketing, then public relations. In 2017, she was appointed President.

DELIA VIADER

Proprietor, Viader Vineyards & Winery

Born in Argentina, proprietor Delia Viader spent much of her formative years in Europe, especially in France. Delia came to the United States as a post-graduate student and holds a doctorate in Philosophy from the Sorbonne University in Paris, France, and pursued advanced business studies at three American universities: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; University of California, Berkeley; and University of California, Davis.

Recognizing the potential of the up-and-coming wine region nearby, Delia soon set her sights on purchasing land in the Napa Valley and subsequently plunged into the wine business in the early 1980s. With an initial loan from her father, Engr. Walter Viader, she acquired their Howell Mountain property and set out to create a world-class wine estate.

Delia continued learning about winemaking through programs in Enology and Viticulture offered at the University of California, Davis, to better learn the practical theory behind making fine wine. While raising four children on her own, Delia forged the vision and design for this unique estate vineyard property, wine blend and brand. Her story illustrates the importance of education and understanding coupled with following one’s instincts. The Viader estate and Delia’s wines have consistently reflected these strengths.

MARLA BEDROSIAN

Co-Founder, Domaine de la Rivière

Given that Marla Bedrosian spent her entire adult life in the hospitality industry, it’s no surprise that she will always find a reason to entertain and host friends and family at Vineyard Eleven whenever the moment allows.

Marla’s love for wine began to develop with her first role at Fairmont Hotels in the early ’90s. While spending time with the hotel’s culinary team, sommelier, and food and beverage experts, she began to deeply respect what was in her glass and wanted to seek knowledge behind the magic. While Marla jokes when admitting she started with “white zinfandel,” she smiles when she now describes the pinot noir and chardonnay that grow all around her.

While overseeing sales and marketing for Domaine de la Rivière, Marla is passionately involved in the community and the philanthropic efforts her family is involved in. Her favorite time of the day is when she’s enjoying a glass of Russian River wine with friends and family, while marveling at the beauty of the landscape right in front of her.

SUZANNE CHAMBERS

President, Chambers & Chambers Wine Merchants

A native of California and the daughter of a commercial pilot with a passion for wine, Suzanne Chambers developed an appreciation for all things vinous and travel at an early age. In the mid-1960s, Suzanne’s father and Co-Founder of Chambers & Chambers Wine Merchants, Jack Chambers, began flying to France regularly to visit Burgundy and explore his passion. During this time, Suzanne decided to spend a school year abroad in Switzerland, sharing in her father’s wine adventures whenever she could. Shortly after Suzanne returned home, their partnership began. What started as a passion for Burgundy and the establishment of a small portfolio of producers in 1973 has grown to include some of the greatest wine estates in the world. Forty-five years later, she still travels annually to meet with her longtime friends and explore new business opportunities.

Suzanne lives in St. Helena, California, with her husband of 27 years, Larry Turley, of Turley Wine Cellars. The couple has four daughters as well as 16 chickens, four cats and two dogs.
