Join the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and artist Afruz Amighi for a discussion of contemporary art, inspiration and the Asian American experience. From the artist’s studio in Brooklyn, Abby Chen, Curator of Contemporary Art, and Afruz will discuss the artist’s monumental architectural installation, My House, My Tomb, inspired by the Taj Mahal. Beyond My House, My Tomb, Abby and Afruz share the ways that art creates places of refuge and solace.

AFRUZ AMIGHI

Artist

Afruz Amighi completed her B.A. in Political Science at Barnard College at Columbia University before going on to complete her MFA at New York University. Amighi has exhibited her work in the United States, London and the Middle East, and has been the recipient of a NYFA Fellowship in Sculpture and Jameel Prize for Middle Eastern Contemporary Art. In 2018, she had her first museum exhibition at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville, Tennessee. Amighi’s work is included in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and The Morgan Library & Museum, among others. Her work is currently on view at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and the Asia Society and Museum in New York. Amighi currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

ABBY CHEN

Head of Contemporary Art, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco

Abby Chen has served as the Senior Associate Curator and Head of Contemporary Art at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco since 2019. Leading the newly established Contemporary Art department, Chen has spearheaded the Asian Art Museum’s 2021 museum transformation with a new emphasis on contemporary art and dedication to digital enhancement. In less than two years, Chen has led nearly a dozen exhibitions and site-specific installations. Prior to joining the Asian Art Museum, Chen served for over a decade as the Curator and Artistic Director at the Chinese Culture Center and Foundation of San Francisco. Chen is passionate about advocating for artists’ autonomy and telling untold stories. Her focus on bringing art from and into marginalized communities has broken barriers imposed on ethnic institutions and neighborhoods.
